As China's status rises, multinational companies and global think tanks are partnering with Chinese universities. By doing so, the former can broaden their share in the Chinese market, customize their products to local needs, train employees, nurture talent and improve corporate image. The latter can conduct joint research on a wide range of issues and can influence government policies.

Foreign institutions are expected to continue establishing joint research institutes with Chinese universities. But first, they must select partners who can meet their purpose. To obtain potential customers, they can choose multiple partners, but if they want local technologies, they need to partner with the few that have high technologies. However, a careful approach is vital in research on potentially controversial issues such as politics, diplomacy and society.
