The global market for NAND Flash memory has grown at an exceptional pace over the past five years. It expanded on an average rate of 63% a year, from US$600 million in 1999 to US$7 billion in 2004, and approaches the market size of NOR flash memory chips worth US$8.4 billion in 2004. In the flash memory chip market, divided between NAND-type and NOR-type chips, NAND claimed a share of 45% in 2004 up from a mere 13% in 2000. Out of the total memory chip market worth US$47.1 billion, NAND flash accounted for 15% in 2004.
